WELL DONE EVERYBODY Good news to date, In February 2007 we had the lowest reports of Motor cycles over the Manor, this is fantastic news and hopefully this is the future trend and not a temporary lull during the winter months. The combined efforts with everyone working together to deter these bikers has had a great affect on this, as days get warmer we may see an increase of the bikers returning, we must all be vigilant and follow the guidance of Mark Lambkins team and contact them, again you can pass the information to us by clicking the link below, we will forward this to the gooshays team Many Thanks |

At the last meeting of The Friends we decided to highlight other areas of concern in the area. The new pages will be entitled "Beauty Spots of Harold Hill". It is our aim to highlight some of these eyesores. We believe that the Councillors who put themselves forward (and are paid rather well) to oversee our public services should be held responsible for their provision, and that the residents who dump rubbish in our streets should be shamed. We will report on the action that they do or do not take. So watch this space. If you have your own pet eyesore, why not contact us at VISIT THE BEAUTY SPOTS OF HAROLD HILL Cllr Mann is the first recipient of our request for help read the email sent to him below Dear Cllr Mann, in recent years it has become the practise of a minority of local residents to dump rubbish in the streets of Harold Hill in the hope that the refuse collectors will collect it. The refuse collectors remove all that is within their contract and leave the rest. This can be carpets, furniture and even white goods, as well as garden or other refuse in the wrong bags. We are sure you are well aware of the problem. We are writing to urge you to collect this rubbish far more quickly than you do and probably more importantly take action to prevent the recurrence; maybe a well publicised prosecution would have some effect. We are sure that a bit of effort in this direction will be more cost effective in the long run. In the meantime can you arrange to clear the large amount of bags and other rubbish scattered along Gooshays Drive. Del Smith (Friends of Dagnam Park)

22nd August 2005 New face for ‘Wildspace' Project I'd like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to the ‘Friends of Dagnam Park, and the Manor, Local Nature Reserve'. My name is Andy Casson and I have recently started as the new Havering ‘Wildspace! Community Liaison Officer' (CLO). Many of you will have been familiar with the previous officer Richard Cottam who earlier this year moved on to pastures new and is now working as a ranger in the Lee Valley Park. I have a background in working with local communities on regeneration and environmental projects across East London and am currently picking up where Richard left off. I will be focussing my attention on designating two additional Local Nature Reserves at the Ingrebourne and Rainham Marsh areas, and will also be continuing to support the work of the ‘friends of group', looking to move forward with the list of work priority issues raised by the group, reducing motorcycle access points being foremost. I have already met a couple of group members and explored the Repton Landscape, and am looking forward to meeting more members in the future, through walks, talks and activities. The Wildspace! Project is English Nature's grant scheme for Local Nature Reserves which involves local communities in the improvement, care and enjoyment of their local environment. For further information contact Andy Casson, LBH Wildspace Community Liaison Officer on 01708 432285 or e-mail andrew.casson@havering.gov.uk |

21st March 2005 Richard Cottam, has confirmed he will be leaving us at Easter to work in the Lea Valley Country Park, He has achieved a lot in the year or so with us and has always been helpful to the friends. So good luck Richard and thanks. Peter Williams says that he does not expect it to take too long to get a new officer in place, we hope not, there is a lot more to do. The original two-year project has now been increased to three years so plenty of time to make inroads into the priority works. Del |

Dear Friends, you may have noticed that some extensive works are taking
place over the manor at this time, some of the works have not gone totally
to plan but the parks best interest are at heart, the work has been
approved by Geoff Pepper who is the Boroughs parks manager, the works
are suspended at this point in time following some concerns and oversights
which have been addressed by several neighbours and members of FODP. Many thanks to Dennis and Don for consolidating these points to Geoff Pepper FODP
we will give you an update ASAP and the borough intentions once we receive any more communication FODP Admin

In April 1980, A Nightingale arrived in Dagnam Park, it was first heard in daylight in the corner of Fir Wood, near the golf course, it sang all afternoon on the 16th April. It was subsequently heard by other bird watchers over a period of about 6 weeks. As far as we know this was the first documented sighting of the species in the park. Dave Sampson and Colin Jupp have kindly listed the subsequent sightings . These being; Hatters Wood 14/5/1980, Priory 22/5/1987and the scrub area (ex Rugby pitch) 14-19/5/1994. In 1995 a pair held territory on the margin of Lower Noke Close and young were recorded, confirming the first breeding record in the park (well nearly) There is also one autumn record a single bird on 15/8/84 at the rear of the lily pond. In 2005 I discovered (or was reminded) that Ernie Herbert had in fact recorded the Fir Wood bird during its stay. The recording was made in the dead of night and preserved on tape, Thanks to Ernie you can now hear it yourself. |

I know this may become tedious but we have another picture of the landed gentry from Dagnams. This one is of Sir Richard Neave and his Lady. He is the one that bought Dagnams from Henry Muilman in 1772, demolished most of that building and built the mansion that survived until 1950. He made a bomb from the slave trade, but not a trace of embarrassment shows in his face. Perhaps because he was not alone in that despicable pursuit. .................See the picture

I stumbled across Brian Ecott's website on Hainault Forest yesterday 26/1/05. It is wide ranging and is especially strong on the natural history of the forest, much of the information on identification applies equally to Dagnam Park, well worth a visit at ..Hainault Forest
